Dawg Pound Chronicles: The Most Memorable Wins in Browns History

Click HERE for some of the greatest Cleveland Browns moments in history

Hey, Cleveland Browns fans, it’s time to take a walk down Browns Boulevard, the darkest avenue you know. Join me as I suggest some of the most emotionally and franchise-changing games in Browns history for your enjoyment. Die-hard Dawg Pound to the end, you’ll surely enjoy what I’m sayin’. Don’t be nervous, you’ll get through it like the persevering fanbase you are. And when it’s over, don’t forget to turn on your transistor radio to your local Cleveland news station for a field goal update.

To be quite honest, being a Browns fan is sometimes painful. We’ve had our fair share of losses and hardships. But for every setback and disappointment, there was at least one moment when the game ended and we could cheer. Just a question of picking those shining moments from the brownish mix of the rest.

OK, I hear you. ‘What about the tough losses or the ones that got away?’ Fair enough. It’s hard to pretend that isn’t painful. But let’s focus, today, on wins – those moments the history books and generations of Browns fans will remember forever. So grab a facial tissue (for the tears that come from joy, I hope), and let’s celebrate.

And so, as the storied history of the Dawg Pound would have it, which triumphs weathered the test of time ... and were canonized to the Dawg Pound Hall of Fame? That’s what we aim to uncover as we re-live some of the all-time best wins by the Browns, from historic post-season games to indelible last-minute rallies, each a perfectly crafted 60 minutes better than life. To start, let’s first establish a big-picture history perspective, and take a trip down memory lane to where it all began.

The Drive-In the 1986 AFC Championship Game, Bernie Kosar led an improbable 98-yard drive to tie the game at the end of regulation and send it into overtime, earning a spot in Browns folklore.

Red Right 88: Even though the Browns finished short of victory in the 1980 AFC Divisional Playoff Game, to this day, the faithful remember their decision to take a deep shot with less than a minute left, a pass play code-named ‘Red Right 88’, as an act of devotion combined with bravado.

The Comeback: the stuff of legend, 2014: the Browns produced one of the greatest comebacks in league annals, clawing their way back from a 25-point deficit against the Tennessee Titans to win the game in the dwindling moments of heart-in-the-throat, last-second action.

Monday Night Miracle: Is there an NFL Monday Night Football fan who does not remember the Browns’ game against the New York Jets in 1970 and their quarterback Bill Nelsen? The Browns pulled off a miraculous comeback at the last minute to win the game and send the fans home delirious.

Anyhow, there you have it – a smattering of Browns’ signature wins to make Browns’ fans proud to be part of the Dawg Pound. The Browns continue to let us down – their pathetic 2-14 record from 2016 makes them the only team in the NFL to miss the playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons – so we take the good with the bad. The next time you’re discouraged and despondent, just remember: the agony of defeat is always better than the ecstasy of victory.

There’s no time like the present to re-experience the feeling, so put on your foam finger and get ready to yell your guts out with the rest of us Browns fans, win or lose. Go Dawg Pound!
